Back To School Style
Having a good sense of style is a great way to express yourself and gain confidence. When dressing for school, the most important thing is to feel comfortable and confident. However, it doesn’t hurt to pay attention to some of the upcoming trends of the season. Junior, Piper Wallace said, “A couple of my favorite trends right now are glitter/holographic lip gloss and platform shoes- they’re so much fun and make a simple shoe that much better.” Utilitarian dressing (Jumpsuits, khaki-like material, etc.), oversized suits and blazers, stripes, and kitsch dressing (clothes that are meant to look cheap or overly eccentric) were other trends spotted at New York Fashion Week this September. At Riverbend, Senior, Katherine Hummel says she has noticed a rise in Bohemian style, whereas Senior, Johnny Bailey, has noticed a return to 80s/90s style.
When looking for places to shop, fashion doesn’t always have to come at a high price. Both Wallace and Bailey enjoy thrifting at Global Threadz in Downtown Fredericksburg and Goodwill. Thrifting is a great way to find unique pieces at much cheaper prices than if you were to buy them from their original source. Forever 21 is Hummel’s favorite store, which also offers a variety of fashion at a low cost.
You also don’t have to buy completely new outfits to have good style. Some of the best wardrobes consist of mostly basic necessities and are scattered with statement pieces. Some “in” pieces this season are statement earrings, bold jackets or coats, platform sneakers, clothing with ruffles, and flared or cropped denim. All of these can easily be found throughout the many affordable shops in Fredericksburg and surrounding areas.
Whatever your style is, the most important thing is for you to be yourself. According to Bailey, “If you think something is cool and you want to wear it, then wear it. Don’t be afraid of what people will think of you because it really doesn’t matter.”
