Bears Make a Splash
It is that time of year again, the start of the 2013-2014 swim season, except this year comes with a few changes. Along with a new practice location, the bears welcome two new coaches to the team. Practices are now held at the Spotsylvania YMCA from 7:45 – 9pm as compared to previous years when practice was held at St. Michaels at roughly the same time. Some swimmers were upset about the location change and did not join the team because of it. Others put up with change for the love of the sport. Senior and four year swimmer, Noelle Luis, said “It’s pretty far but it’s worth it for swim team!” Luis said that car pulling to practice with friends makes the drive better.
Riverbend also welcomed two new coaches at the start of this year’s swim season, Head Coach Michele Golles and Assistant Coach Dani Fletcher. Coach Golles has been swimming since age five and has loved it ever since. She also went to Wane State on a scholarship for swimming. Coach Michelle said “I actually found out about this job through last year’s coach, Coach Hagan. She’s my roommate and recommended me.” Coach Golles said that the year has been good so far and that the season looks bright. “We have strong returning swimmers for both the boys and girls team and we also have a strong freshmen.” said Golles. Coach Fletcher has been swimming since she was young and has swam year round since she was ten. Coach Fletcher went to Liberty on a scholarship for swimming for two years and has spent the last three summers as a summer league coach. Coach Fletcher said, “So far I love it! I coached with Coach Hagan over the summer and she recommended me for the job.” Coach Fletcher also believes the bears will excel this season.
