In Case You Missed: 57th Grammy Awards and 87th Oscars

The 57th Grammy Awards was live on Sunday, February 8th, and the 87th Oscars were held on February 22nd. Celebrities from around the world gathered to give appreciation and respect to the best artists and producers of 2014. The shows consisted of over 100 awards: 83 Grammy Awards and 23 Oscars. Each award from both shows had 5 nominees with the exception of one award in the Oscars, Best Picture which had 8 nominees, that were all voted on.

The Grammy Awards had a lot to hand out, but the most notable award winner was Sam Smith who won three awards: Best New Artist and also Song of the Year and Record of the Year for his song “Stay With Me”. He also performed his award winning song, “Stay With Me”, at the show. Other winners were “Drunk in Love” by Beyoncé for Best R&B Song, “I” by Kendrick Lamar for Best Rap Song, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” by Glenn Campbell for Best Country Song, and “Happy” by Pharrell Williams for Best Music Video.

Album of the Year was given to Beck for Morning Phase and along with the award came a slight disruption from Kanye West. While Beck was accepting his award for Best Album of the Year, Kanye West decided that he did not deserve the award and started making his way onto the stage. Before he actually spoke a word, he though better and sat back down. Beck handled the incident with grace and even invited Kanye back to finish his statement. In an interview afterwards, Kanye said that he went up because he felt that Beyoncé deserved the award and that Beck should respect that and give the award to her. This is not Kanye’s first time, he had another run in with Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

The Oscar awards were also held in February. The Oscars focus more on movies and film while the Grammy Awards are about songs and performances. The Oscars had fewer awards, only 23, but there are still some ones to notice. The Best Picture award was given to the movie Birdman, a movie about a man who tries to recover his acting career. Best Actor in a leading role was given to Eddie Redmayne for his role in the film The Theory of Everything and the Best Actress in a leading role was given to Julianne Moore for her role in Still Alice. Another set of awards was Best Actor in a supporting role and Best Actress in a supporting role; these awards are given to actors and actresses who performed outstandingly in a role that isn’t the main role. Best Actor in a supporting role was given to J.K. Simmons for the movie Whiplash and Best Actress in a supporting role was given to Patricia Arquetta for her role in Boyhood.

The Oscars did not escape any awkward mishaps. This time John Travolta was the center of attention for the way he handled himself on stage and on the red carpet. Travolta can be seen sneaking up behind Scarlett Johannson, and while he presented an award with Idina Menzel, he awkwardly would not let her move her face as he grabbed her chin. He later said that this was a failed joke that appeared too serious.

Both the Oscars and the Grammy Awards went well overall. The winners worked for countless hours to be able to achieve this honor. They can now rest and prepare for the next awards.
